Our PFAS-Free Promise — Why We Chose the Harder Path
Introduction
In 2023, independent testing of major period panty brands in the US and Europe revealed a disturbing pattern: products marketed as safe, natural, and chemical-free contained PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — at significant levels.
PFAS have been nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body.
Bamboology made the PFAS-free choice before it became a mainstream conversation. Here's why.
What PFAS Are and Where They Hide in Clothing
| Product Category | How PFAS Are Used | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Period Panties | Waterproof leakproof coating on inner barrier | HIGH — against intimate skin for hours |
| Sportswear | Water-repellent finish on outer layer | MEDIUM — sweat and heat may increase exposure |
| Outdoor Jackets | DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating | LOW–MEDIUM — limited skin contact |
| Stain-Resistant Clothing | Surface treatment on fabric | LOW–MEDIUM — outer layer exposure |
| Synthetic Innerwear | Some moisture-wicking finish treatments | MEDIUM — prolonged skin contact |
What the Research Says About PFAS Health Risks
| Health Area | Research Finding |
|---|---|
| Hormonal Disruption | PFAS may interfere with the body's endocrine system and hormonal signalling. |
| Immune System | Studies have linked PFAS exposure to reduced immune response and vaccine effectiveness. |
| Fertility | Research has found associations between PFAS exposure and reduced fertility. |
| Pregnancy | Higher PFAS exposure has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth. |
| Cancer Risk | Certain PFAS compounds have been classified as possible or probable carcinogens. |
| Bioaccumulation | PFAS can accumulate in blood and tissues and may persist in the body for long periods. |
The Indian Regulatory Gap
India currently has no specific regulation requiring PFAS disclosure in textile products.
This means a period panty brand can potentially use PFAS-containing coatings and legally sell the product without disclosing this information to consumers.
As a result, consumers should not assume a product is PFAS-free unless the claim is supported by independent testing and verifiable certification.
This is why OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is particularly important. OEKO-TEX restricts numerous harmful substances, including PFAS, through independent testing.
Bamboology's Patented PFAS-Free Solution
The easiest and cheapest way to create a leakproof period panty is often to use PFAS-based waterproof coatings.
Bamboology chose a different approach.
We developed a patented multilayer technology (Patent No. IN389377) that achieves leak protection through structural design rather than PFAS-based chemical coatings.
The result is a leakproof solution designed without PFAS, dioxins, or formaldehyde.
This approach required additional research and development, more complex sourcing, higher manufacturing costs, and years of innovation to bring to market.
We chose this path because we believe consumers deserve complete transparency and safer alternatives for products worn during some of life's most sensitive moments.
Why Our PFAS-Free Promise Matters
Every material choice reflects a commitment to safety, performance, and sustainability. By prioritising PFAS-free innovation, Bamboology aims to offer leakproof protection without relying on potentially harmful chemical shortcuts.
It's a more challenging path, but one we believe is worth taking.
